What better way to explore the ancient Roman civilization than by creating a model of a Roman road? This hands-on activity combines history, engineering, and a bit of creativity to teach children about one of the most impressive achievements of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In our study of Ancient Rome, Josh and Megan enjoyed learning how to build a model of a Roman road. Brianna was in charge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hsmomof3.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/step-by-step-to-making-salt-dough-map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">salt dough map<\/a>, so I let Josh and Megan take charge of the road model.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/How-to-Build-a-Model-of-a-Roman-Road.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/How-to-Build-a-Model-of-a-Roman-Road.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/How-to-Build-a-Model-of-a-Roman-Road-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/How-to-Build-a-Model-of-a-Roman-Road.jpg\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>The Importance of Roman Roads<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Roman roads weren&rsquo;t just pathways; they were vital to the empire&rsquo;s expansion and efficiency. These roads allowed for quick transportation of armies, trade goods, and communication across vast distances. Some of these roads were so well-built that their remnants still exist today!<\/p>\n<p>This project offers students a chance to understand the engineering brilliance of the Romans while fostering a deep appreciation for their ingenuity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To build a road, the Ancient Romans first dug a ditch. Then, they filled the ditch with sand, followed by a layer of gravel. On top of the gravel came a layer of concrete, which they made from volcanic ash. They made the final layer&nbsp;of smooth stones. First,&nbsp;mix water with Elmer&rsquo;s glue to make a &ldquo;paintable&rdquo; glue. (Mod Podge could be substituted here.) &nbsp;Spread the glue all over the inside bottom of the shoe box lid. Then, spread a layer of sand over the glue and let it dry for about 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"roman road 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/roman-road-2.jpg\" alt=\"roman road 2\" width=\"470\" height=\"358\" border=\"0\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/roman-road-2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Step 2:<\/span> Shake off the excess sand, Then, paint glue over 3\/4 of the sand. Spread the gravel (we used gravel sold for fish tanks) over the glue. Next, pour the watered down glue over the top of the gravel to hold it in place. Let this layer dry overnight.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"roman road 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/roman-road-3.jpg\" alt=\"roman road 3\" width=\"470\" height=\"358\" border=\"0\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/roman-road-3.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Step 3:<\/span> Use plaster of Paris to represent the concrete. Mix according to package directions. Cover half of the sand and gravel with the plaster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"roman road 4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/roman-road-4.jpg\" alt=\"roman road 4\" width=\"470\" height=\"358\" border=\"0\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/roman-road-4.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Step 4:<\/span> While the plaster is still soft, add &ldquo;paving stones.&rdquo; Ours were decorative stones from the craft\/candle section of Wal-mart. If I had it to do over again, I would have bought larger, smoother stones and I would have let the plaster set just a bit longer. It gave Josh and Megan a better understanding of how the Romans constructed roads, and they were very proud to have something that they made themselves to display as part of our study of Ancient Rome.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Educational Extensions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Math Connection<\/strong>: Calculate the distances between Roman cities and explore how long it would take to travel that far using Roman roads.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engineering Discussion<\/strong>: Discuss the importance of drainage and durability in the design of Roman roads.
