I said, &ldquo;Hi!&rdquo; and he wheeled around excitedly to greet me. The first words out of his mouth? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Guess what, Ms. Katie? Of course, kids are always kids, with more commonalities than differences. However, especially this time of year, I see ways that the homeschooled kids in my life stand out in some (honestly, I think) pretty cool ways. Today, we&rsquo;re diving into <\/span><b>&ldquo;How to Spot a Homeschooler by Our Favorite Gifts.&rdquo;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This goes for any time of year, but especially during the holiday season, when <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphomeschoolmoms.com\/easy-diy-christmas-gift-eucalyptus-bath-salts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gift-giving <\/a>is in full swing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1. Our Favorite Gifts Let Us Nerd Out Bigtime&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most homeschoolers are constantly learning (even those who don&rsquo;t necessarily recognize it in those terms.) Learning is part of our play and home, as much as it is part of school. It&rsquo;s an essential part of life. And most of all, we love the time that we get to spend learning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about what we love. In other words, we love a chance to really &ldquo;nerd out&rdquo; about our interests, and we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definitely <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love gifts that support that!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gifts that let us dive deeper into a skill or passion we&rsquo;ve taught ourselves are always a hit. A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ZTnLxw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sewing machine<\/a><\/strong>, an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4gq6MKv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">archery set<\/a><\/strong>, blacksmithing tools, or yarn for a growing business of hand-knit stuffies or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlypassionatecuriosity.com\/pumpkin-crochet-craft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crochet crafts<\/a><\/strong>? However niche it is, if it&rsquo;s<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> our <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">niche, the answer is, &ldquo;Yes, please!&rdquo; And yes, I know I am FULLY into stereotype territory here, but it&rsquo;s absolutely, joyfully true. A homeschooler&rsquo;s list of &ldquo;wants&rdquo; might look simple, or maybe even usual, compared to the average kids&rsquo;, but these sorts of gifts are deeply personal in that offer a chance to grow in a passion project.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, my daughter&rsquo;s favorite gifts are tools that let her create independently, like an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3DEBErX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embroidery kit<\/a><\/strong>, or her own set of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4a8CVEd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">art supplies<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp; For your animal-loving homeschooler, maybe it&rsquo;s night vision goggles to learn more about what animals come out at night. (Maybe it&rsquo;s a goat that funds entrepreneurial endeavors <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so he or she can afford<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to buy night vision goggles.) I love that so many homeschooled kids have a defined sense of self and a love for lifelong learning, and I think it&rsquo;s a pretty cool way to stand out in a crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>2.&nbsp; Experiences and Consumable Items Are Favorites (For the Whole Family)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, the best gifts for homeschoolers are the ones that don&rsquo;t fill up the house with more stuff (and all the homeschool moms said, &ldquo;amen!&rdquo;) Often, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/how-to-spot-a-homeschooler-by-things-you-find-in-our-houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our houses are full of plenty of interesting things already<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, kids are kids, and homeschooled kids love toys and video games and all that stuff as much as any other children! However, homeschooled kids also love experiences and consumable items.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We love really good food (and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com\/ways-homeschoolers-are-like-hobbits\/#:~:text=Homeschoolers%20are%20like%20hobbits%20because%20we%20are%20surprising!&amp;text=We%20tend%20to%20jump%20in,with%20more%20hands%2Don%20activities.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like Hobbits<\/a>, are always game to eat.) Opportunities to get out and do fun things, AKA the chance to take more &ldquo;field trips,&rdquo; are always a hit, too. As homeschool parents, I think we just naturally cultivate an appreciation for these things in our homes. Kids know and value the thoughtfulness of a box of homemade candy (maybe because they help make this in their own homes for others). They value a good outing in the middle of a weekday, or a family trip, while their public-schooled friends are in the classroom. These make some of our favorite gifts, the ones that create traditions and memories that continue to build onto each other, year after year. Things like:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A giant box of homemade cookies (never met one we didn&rsquo;t love) or a favorite dinner delivery.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A gingerbread house kit to put together during the holiday season.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passes to the zoo, science museum, or trampoline park.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coupons for movie tickets, family hikes, or ice cream dates.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A family trip somewhere cool!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And one more time for the homeschooling parents in the back: we honestly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when someone gives our family an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something yummy to eat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead of another toy. These are some of our favorite gifts because they&rsquo;re practical, thoughtful, and let us create memories together&mdash;which, let&rsquo;s be honest, is the best part of gift-giving anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3. Our Favorite Gifts&nbsp; Include Those We Give to Others<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favorite things about homeschooled kids? They get genuinely excited about gift-giving, and especially about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gifts for others. My kids and I call the month of December, &ldquo;Elf School,&rdquo; and a favorite part of December for all. M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aybe you do this too if your homeschooling family spends time:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lovetheserecipes.com\/hot-cocoa-cookies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baking <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lovetheserecipes.com\/hot-cocoa-cookies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cookies<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lovetheserecipes.com\/hot-cocoa-cookies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a><\/strong>and delivering them to neighbors together.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hand-painting cards for friends.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlypassionatecuriosity.com\/felt-christmas-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Making ornaments <\/a><\/strong>to hang and give to others.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Packaging gifts from your family business (which they helped with!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever it looks like, homeschoolers are often naturally involved in the process of giving, creating, and sharing joy. In today&rsquo;s busy world&mdash;where many parents carry the burden of holiday prep alone&mdash;I think that&rsquo;s a pretty special gift to everyone.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my family, we discuss giving at Christmas as a way to think about the gift that God gave us. It&rsquo;s an important lesson, and I love that homeschooling allows us to teach it in such a hands-on, intentional way. The kids see it, they experience it, and (best of all) they enjoy it!
